Iowa leaders hail USMCA

Top Iowa officials are hailing the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Governor Kim Reynolds says U.S. dairy farmers will benefit from the deal.

“Basically they’ve opened it up to the same requirements that Canada has with the TPP.  Dairy has been a sticking point and our dairy farmers have been hurting, so I think this is a positive step in the right direction.”

Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig echoed the Governor.

“This obviously is a step in the right direction.  We had been hopeful all along that it would be a true tri-national agreement, that we would get Canada to the table.  So this is very good news to have this concluded.”

President Trump has expressed concern about Congress ratifying the Agreement, but Naig suggests it shouldn’t be a problem.

“My sense was that the issue with Congress (was) having an agreement with Mexico but not an agreement with Canada was actually more of an issue in terms of that Congressional approval.”

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley told Brownfield earlier this week the new agreement should not face many complications securing majority votes in both Houses.
