MASON - The Lansing area's first Klavon's Pizzeria & Pub, taking shape on two acres of property at 318 W. Kipp Road across from the Meijer store, won't open as soon as a company official projected it would in May.

Klavon's Pizzeria & Pub will host a three-day job fair this month at its third location taking shape on West Kipp Road.

Klavon's Director of Operations Andrea LaFever said in an email to the State Journal the 9,000-square-foot restaurant won't open this fall, but it could be open by January.

"We are hoping to be open around the New Year but it could be slightly later than that," LaFever said.

No opening date has been set, she said.

"Construction is still ongoing and we do not have a set opening date in mind just yet as it is too hard to tell with just beginning the interior design," LaFever said.

The company released a rendering of the of the 200-seat building in May, with an original projection of opening by October. Tuesday morning a few workers were working at the building just off U.S.-127.

The Mason location is the Jackson-area restaurant group's third restaurant, and its first in the Lansing area. It's expected to employ 150 people.

Klavon's current locations include a 9,500-square-foot restaurant in Vandercook Lake, just south of Jackson, and a 4,000-square-foot restaurant in Rives Junction, northwest of the city. LaFever said the company currently employs just under 200 people.

The restaurant's menu includes different types of pizza, including Neapolitan wood-fired, Detroit-style, Chicago-style and classic American, as well as salads, soups, sandwiches and burgers.

The company has secured a liquor license for the new location, and will offer a selection of wines and Michigan craft beers, along with "hand-crafted cocktails," LaFever said in May. Those are made with in-house simple syrups and fresh fruits, she said.

Hotel site plan approved

Meanwhile plans for what could be Mason's first national chain hotel, a $7.2 million 44,376-square-foot combination Main Stay Suites and Sleep Inn, are moving forward.

Mason Hospitality Group LLC, the development group proposing the four-story, 72-room hotel and conference center, received final site plan approval from the city's Planning Commission last month, Mason's Community Development Director Elizabeth Hude said.

The hotel would be built on just over 10 acres on the north side of West Kipp Road, west of US-127, according to city documents.

The city has not issued a building permit for its construction yet, Hude said Monday.
