TEMPE, Ariz. — Injuries and attrition already are beginning to mount for Michigan State.

Cole Chewins started at left tackle but was on the field for just one play in the 13th-ranked Spartans’ 16-13 loss at Arizona State on Saturday night.

MSU played without two defensive starters who did not make the trip, then lost starting running back LJ Scott, left guard David Beedle and punter Jake Hartbarger during the game.

Already without cornerback Josiah Scott (left leg), the Spartans left defensive end Jacub Panasiuk (left arm) and linebacker Tyriq Thompson (undisclosed) back in East Lansing, coach Mark Dantonio said after the game.

According to East Lansing 54B District Court files, Thompson was arraigned this week for a misdemeanor noise violation. He is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on Sept. 27. The original charge for a noise violation for Thompson was issued Sept. 1, and he posted $200 bond on Tuesday after pleading not guilty, according to online court records.

Panasiuk left the Spartans' win over Utah State midway through the fourth quarter and did not return.

Drew Beesley started at defensive end and Brandon Bouyer-Randle at strong-side linebacker for the Spartans.

Chewins played the first snap of MSU’s first offensive possession but was replaced on the second play by Luke Campbell, who started last week against Utah State. That game snapped Chewins’ streak of 16 straight starts at the position.

Dantonio said Chewins “got dinged early” and “tweaked” an unspecified injury.

Scott left the field after a 4-yard carry to open the second half, eventually returning in uniform but without his helmet and with a towel around his neck. The senior had just 19 yards on seven carries.

Hartbarger got hit after a penalty whistle and had to leave the game with an apparent leg injury. Backup quarterback Rocky Lombardi made his debut in Hartbarger’s place in the fourth quarter.

“Well, you’re always concerned when they go out,” Dantonio said about Scott and Hartbarger, “but I think both will be OK.”

Linebacker Joe Bachie and defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk also both left the game briefly late but returned.

Defensive end Dillon Alexander (foot) also sat out for the second straight game. Other Spartans who did not make the trip were CB Chris Jackson, LB Ed Warriner, OL Bryce Wilker, OL Jack Henrichs, WR Javez Alexander, DE Mufi Hill-Hunt, TE Noah Davis, WR Jahz Watts, P William Przystup, DT Dashaun Mallory and DE Parks Gissinger.

The Spartans (1-1) get the week off before opening Big Ten play at Indiana on Sept. 22. Kickoff time and TV network are yet to be determined.

“We got some guys dinged up a little bit,” Dantonio said, “so it’s a good time for a bye week.”
