LANSING - Two people were killed and three seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash Sunday night at the new Pattengill School, formerly Fairview Elementary School, police said.

A 36-year-old woman and 43-year-old man died in the crash. Three children, ages 5, 11 and 12, suffered life threatening injuries, Lansing Police Department Public Information Director Robert Merritt said.

The woman was pronounced dead shortly after the 11 p.m. crash, Merritt said. The man died later at the hospital. Police have not released their identities and will not do so until family is notified.

The car hit the school on the northwest side, Merritt said. Construction crews used a sheet of wood to cover the damage, which is near the back of the school in the center area behind the playground.

The investigation was ongoing Monday morning.

School will start as planned Aug. 27 for the new Pattengill School, Lansing School District spokesperson Robert Kolt said. The work to repair the "significant damage" to the building started Monday morning after the crash, he said.

"It'll be a lot of work and a pretty major task to make the repairs, but we've consulted with the construction team for the project and they're working right now to try to get everything done on time," Kolt said.

The former Fairview Elementary recently underwent a $16.3 million renovation, paid for with money from the Pathway Promise bond voters approved in 2016. Once completed, the school will replace Pattengill Academy, which will become the new Eastern High School following renovations.
