York County World War II veteran Thomas W. Clarke, of Spring Garden Township, passes away

Thomas W. Clarke, a World War II veteran and Spring Garden Township resident, passed away on Tuesday, June 12 at age 92.

 

On Tuesday, June 12, Thomas Wallace "Wally" Clarke passed away at his home in Spring Garden Township. He was 93. 

Clarke was born in Northumberland County, Va., and served in the European theater during World War II as a Machine Gun Sergeant in the 26th Division of Patton's Third Army. He earned a Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star, French Legion of Honor "Chevalier", good conduct medal and five major campaign medals. 

Clarke published his World War II memoirs in May 2009 in a book titled "George S. Patton's Typical Soldier," which he was encouraged to write by General Patton's granddaughter.
