EAST LANSING — Michigan State football has to wait more than three months before it can begin its quest for a Big Ten championship — and perhaps beyond.

That does not mean we can’t look ahead.

The Spartans’ seven-home/five-away schedule is favorable for the most part, with a daunting early September trip to the desert heat at Arizona State and a game at Penn State that could well decide the Big Ten East Division champion. MSU also welcomes both Michigan and Ohio State to Spartan Stadium and avoids West Division-favorite Wisconsin again.

Here’s a game-by-game look at the Spartans’ season.

Aug. 31: Utah State Aggies

Where: Spartan Stadium, East Lansing.

Last year’s record: 6-7, 4-4 Mountain West.

Postseason: Lost 26-20 in OT to New Mexico State in Arizona Bowl.

Head coach: Matt Wells, sixth season.

Players to watch: QB Jordan Love, WR Ron'quavion Tarver, LB Suli Tamaivena.

About the opponent: Utah State played to a 10-10 halftime tie at Wisconsin to open last season before the Badgers ripped off the final 39 points. The Aggies allowed 26.9 points per game overall but yielded 38.9 points in their seven losses. Now a redshirt sophomore, Jordan Love took over the starting QB job midway through the season and went 3-3 in those games.

Prediction: MSU 45, Utah State 13.
