Saturday's prep roundup: Mound aces lead Liggett to sweep

Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett benefited from a pair of radiant pitching performances from Alec Azar and Anthony George in a baseball doubleheader sweep of Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Saturday in Catholic League Double-A action.

In Game 1, Azar struck out 11 while allowing only two hits en route to a 3-0 Liggett victory. Dylan Paulsell paced the attack, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Liggett (5-2, 4-0 Catholic League AA).

George commandeered the proceedings in the nightcap, yielding one earned run on three hits in a 6-2 win. He struck out eight Gabriel Richard batters. Logan King went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Liggett.

"We obviously got two great pitching performances," Liggett coach Dan Cimini said.

Gabriel Richard falls to 3-3, 2-2 in Catholic League play.

Birmingham Groves 8-13, Utica 6-2: Erik Joe, Connor Bradbury and George Cutler each had two hits in Game 1 for Groves (7-1). Roman Germanski had two hits for Utica (5-7). In the Game 2, Harrison Cole, Nick Ringler and Bradbury had two hits apiece. Germanski led Utica with two hits in Game 2.

Rochester 9-4, Troy 2-2 (8 innings): In Game 1 Friday at Jimmy John's Field in Utica, Devon Murray had two hits and five RBIs while Joe Holloway struck out five over five innings to earn the win for Rochester (7-2). Noah Stout had two hits and scored two runs while Scott Russell struck out five to earn the win in the nightcap.
