Grand Rapids falls to Manitoba in Game 1 of playoffs

Michael Spacek's power-play goal with 1:09 left lifted the Manitoba Moose to a 3-2 victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins in Game 1 of their best-of-five American Hockey League playoff series Saturday at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Grand Rapids, the Detroit Red Wings top minor league affiliate, enjoyed a short-lived 2-1 lead on Turner Elson's goal at 12:41 of the third before the Moose mounted a comeback.

Manitoba's Cameron Schilling answered 31 seconds later to tie it at 2-all. Jan Kostalek also scored for the Moose at 6:22 of the third.

Grand Rapids' Ben Street opened the scoring at 12:42 of the first. Eric Tangradi and Joe Hicketts assisted.

The Griffins' Dylan McIlrath was off for tripping when Spacek scored the winning goal. Nic Petan and Mason Appleton assisted.

Manitoba netminder Eric Comrie stopped 34 of 36 shots. Tom McCollum made 28 saves in the Grand Rapids' net.

Game 2 is 3 p.m. Sunday at Bell MTS Place.
