History of Earth Day

In early 1969, there was a huge oil spill near Santa Barbara, California, dumping around 100,000 barrels of crude oil into the channel and onto the beaches. This disaster, which, at the time, was the largest oil spill in the United States, served as part of the motivation for Earth Day. The first Earth Day took place April 22, 1970. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year, although events take place all month.

History of Arbor Day

Arbor Day is another environmentally focused celebration in April. The specific focus of Arbor Day is the importance of planting trees. It takes place the last Friday in April every year. Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1872 in Nebraska. Today, Earth Day and Arbor Day are often celebrated together.
