Despite career night from Shay Colley, Michigan State falls in OT to South Dakota in WNIT

VERMILLION, South Dakota - Sophomore Shay Colley turned in the best scoring night of her college career.

It wasn't enough to help the Michigan State women's basketball team keep its season going.

The Spartans' journey came to an end with Thursday's 85-83 overtime setback to South Dakota in a WNIT third-round contest at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

Colley finished with a career-high 31 points and added nine rebounds and seven assists to lead MSU, which ends the season with a 19-14 mark.

Sophomore Taryn McCutcheon added 16 points and junior Jenna Allen scored 14 for the Spartans.

MSU had a chance to tie on the final possession of overtime but missed. The Spartans also missed a potential game-winning shot late in regulation.

The Spartans took an 83-81 lead with 43 seconds remaining after a basket by Nia Hollie. South Dakota (29-6) went ahead with 22 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer by Chloe Lamb.

After a missed shot by MSU, Monica Arens split a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining before Summit League regular-season champion South Dakota was able to hold on in the closing seconds.

MSU jumped out to a 31-18 lead after the opening quarter but couldn't add on to it.

The loss ends the careers of five seniors for MSU - Lexi Gussert, Branndais Agee, Taya Reimer, Kennedy Johnson and Kiara Carter.

Agee matched a school-record for games played by appearing in her 136th contest Thursday.
