Conservationist had soil health all wrong

A renowned conservationist says until a few years ago, he and many others completely missed the mark on soil health.

“I missed that the soil is not just a growing medium, it’s alive.”

That’s Ray Archuleta, who spent 30 years with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Now retired, he tells Brownfield farmers must embrace the soil health movement.

“I was taught that I controlled the ecosystem, that I forced it to get more yield.  That was the wrong premise.  What I teach now and learned to understand is I teach producers how to emulate nature.”

He predicts a fundamental shift towards soil health as farmers look for ways to reduce inputs in a sustainable way.

Archuleta will be in southeast Minnesota the week of March 26th participating in soil health workshops hosted by the Land Stewardship Project.
