Will Michigan State play at Little Caesars Arena in NCAA tournament?

NEW YORK — It might happen. It might not. A lot of basketball remains this week — a complete anomaly of an entire week for No. 2 Michigan State to wait for its NCAA tournament fate.

The Spartans (29-4) won’t get a No. 1 seed, though both Jerry Palm of CBS Sports and Joe Lunardi of ESPN each had them remaining as a No. 2 seed playing in Detroit after losing 75-64 to No. 13 Michigan in the Big Ten tournament semifinals Saturday. That was before the Wolverines won their second straight league tournament title over No. 8 Purdue Sunday, 75-66.

However, Palm said late Sunday he did not believe U-M would receive a higher seed than MSU despite the Spartans only having three Quadrant 1 victories in seven games this season. All four of MSU’s losses also are among Quadrant 1 teams — twice to U-M, and once each to Ohio State and Duke.

It is possible one of the two will end up at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit for the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament, but it does not appear likely that the Spartans and Wolverines will both be in the same early-round location as they were in 2013 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Both teams must wait until Sunday to learn their NCAA fate (6 p.m./TBS), and they will have a little less than two weeks off before their next game. That is due to the Big Ten moving the tournament up one week to play it at Madison Square Garden.

Much of what happens with MSU could hinge on Xavier and Cincinnati, because Detroit is the closest geographic spot to those two. Nashville and Pittsburgh also are potential option for those Ohio schools as higher seeds.
