MSU moves up to No. 6, UM drops to No. 25 in AP poll

Detroit News and wire reports

Michigan State bounced back. On the court, and in the Associated Press Top 25.

The Spartans (17-3) rolled to victory in their only game last week with a rout of Indiana, helping them climb three spots to No. 6 in this week’s AP poll, released Monday.

Michigan State entered the game having lost two of three games.

Michigan (17-5), meanwhile, dropped two spots to No. 25 after a hectic week in which it won two of three games — victories over Maryland and Rutgers were sandwiched around an ugly 72-52 loss at Nebraska.

Michigan State and Michigan occupied the same spots in the coaches poll as well.

Villanova maintained its hold on No. 1 in the AP poll, while another bunch of Wildcats found themselves unranked for the first time in nearly four years.

Kentucky slid out of Monday’s latest poll from No. 18 after losses to South Carolina and Florida, snapping a 30-game home winning streak for the Wildcats in Southeastern Conference play. That dropped coach John Calipari’s Wildcats out for the first time since March 2014 and snapped a 68-week stretch in the poll.

The top three of Villanova, Virginia and Purdue remained the same, with the Wildcats (18-1) remaining firmly in place by collecting 63 of 65 first-place votes. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers (18-1) and the Boilermakers (19-2) have combined to win 25 straight games, 19 by double-digit margins, and split the remaining first-place votes.

Duke inched up a spot to No. 4, while Kansas jumped five spots to No. 5 after winning at West Virginia.
