Wilton Speight delays decision on new school until June

Former Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight has decided to take more time to determine where he will land as a graduate transfer and will wait until the summer to enroll.

Speight was the starter the last two seasons, but in the Big Ten opener last fall at Purdue, he suffered three fractured vertebrae and missed the rest of the season. He started 16 games for the Wolverines and was named the team’s Most Improved Player following the 2016 season.

After the 2017 season, Speight announced on social media his plans to leave Michigan and transfer for his final year of eligibility. At that time, he said he would use the month of December to decide where he would transfer.

“I’m excited to keep pursuing my dreams in a new jersey, but will forever root for the boys wearing the winged helmet,” Speight wrote late last November.

A source close to Speight told The Detroit News on Sunday he felt rushed to make a decision during the short amount of time between his graduation from Michigan last December and January enrollment, so he will enroll somewhere in June.

Until then, Speight will continue training in Los Angeles.

Speight threw for 2,538 yards and 18 touchdowns and had seven interceptions during the 2016 season. He had thrown for 581 yards and three touchdowns when he was season was cut short by injury last fall.
