Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated which municipality Markeeva Ayonna Miller is from. She is from York.

A York woman allegedly assaulted a York County Sheriff's deputy Friday after the deputy tried to take her into custody for a bench warrant, according to court documents.

Markeeva Ayonna Miller, 23, of the 700 block of West King Street, allegedly ran from Deputy Chad G. Smith when he approached her in the Human Services Building, Smith wrote in the arrest affidavit.

Smith learned that Miller had a bench warrant for allegedly fleeing and eluding, and that she was at the Human Services building. When Smith approached Miller and told her that there was a bench warrant for her and he was going to take her into custody, Miller handed some of her property over to a family member and turned around to be handcuffed.

But instead of allowing Smith to handcuff her, Miller ran to the exit and made it through the first door before Smith was able to catch her, Smith wrote in the arrest affidavit. Smith said Miller kept pushing him away.

Smith said he had to take Miller to the ground, but she continued to "resist and fight to get away," Smith said. Miller "got away from me for a brief second by flailing her arms and legs and I had to take her to the ground a second time causing me to sustain abrasions on the hands, wrist, and knees."

Smith told Miller multiple times to put her hands behind her back and to stop resisting, but she refused, Smith said in the arrest affidavit.

Smith was finally able to take Miller into custody. Miller was charged with assault of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest, and arraigned Friday night. Miller was sent to York County Prison after she was unable to post $20,000 bail.

Smith needed medical attention for his injuries, he wrote in the arrest affidavit.

Miller's preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 26 before District Judge Joel N. Toluba.
