These are the people who will lead Lansing city departments for Andy Schor

Lansing Mayor-Elect Andy Schor will take office on January 1, 2018.

LANSING — Mayor-elect Andy Schor has announced his picks to lead city departments, a mix of new faces and hold-overs from the administration of outgoing Mayor Virg Bernero.

The newcomers include:

  • Andrea Crawford, who will lead the Department of Neighborhoods and Citizen Engagement, a new department created by Schor. The city hired Crawford in 2014 and she became Lansing's neighborhood resource coordinator in 2016.
  • Linda Sanchez Gazella, who will be Schor's director human resources. Gazella works as the executive director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Ingham, Eaton and Clinton Counties. She was chief of staff to former Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides, who was in office from 2003 to 2006.
  • Brian McGrain, who will be the city's director of economic development and planning. McGrain currently serves as the associate director and chief operating officer of the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan. He has been an Ingham County commissioner since 2009, representing portions of  Lansing, Lansing Township and East Lansing.
  • Andrew Kilpatrick, who will be the public safety director, which is a promotion from his current position as the city's transportation engineer.

There will also be familiar faces from the Bernero years, including:

  • Mike Yankowski, who will continue as police chief.
  • Jim Smiertka, who will continue as city attorney.
  • Angela Bennett, who will continue as finance director.
  • Randy Talifarro, who will continue as fire chief.
  • Collin Boyce, who will continue as chief information officer.
  • Tammy Good, who will continue as treasurer. 
  • Brett Kaschinske, who will continue as director of parks and recreation.
  • Joan Jackson-Johnson, who will continue as director of the Human Relations and Community Services Department

Samantha Harkins, Schor's chief of staff, said salaries for the department heads will depend on contracts that have yet to be finalized.

Schor, a Democratic state representative, won more than 70% of the vote on Nov. 7 against City Council Member Judi Brown Clarke. He takes office Jan. 1.
