Spring Grove woman fires shotgun at imaginary stalker, cops say

A woman fired a shotgun from inside her Spring Grove home early Monday morning at what she thought was an intruder standing outside, according to charging documents. 

As it turned out, Kayla Marie Smith, 30, of the first block of North Water Street, was impaired when she fired the weapon, and after an investigation, police determined there never was anyone outside her home, documents state.

Smith was charged with discharge of a firearm inside an occupied structure and recklessly endangering another person. As of Monday afternoon, she remained in York County Prison on $10,000 bail, according to online court dockets.

Southwestern Regional Police first came in contact with Smith about 2:36 a.m., after she called York County 911 to say a man was trying to open her window with a credit card. As police were on the way, 911 told them Smith had fired a shotgun, and once they arrived, they found her outside, documents state.

Smith told police that earlier, she and her boyfriend were in bed when she heard noises, and so she took two pills. Police did not say what kind of pills she took. At some point after that, Smith became worried someone was breaking into her home, so she went to a rear window and opened the curtain. Standing outside, she said, was a man wearing a ski mask, smoking a cigarette and holding a yellow lighter, documents state.

"While speaking with Smith it appeared that she was impaired," police wrote in documents, adding that in direct light, Smith's pupils were "very dilated."

Smith's boyfriend grew upset when she told him of the man in the window, telling her there was no one there. Still, he went outside and checked, but could not find anyone. He then left to get cigarettes from a store, documents state.

Five minutes later, Smith got worried again, grabbed a 20-gauge shotgun and fired it into the window. She then took two more pills to calm herself, documents state.

Police found the hole in the window and noted that the window is about four or five feet from another home, which was occupied at the time Smith fired the gun. Police did not indicate that anyone was injured from the blast.

During their investigation, police could not find any signs of forced entry at Smith's home and could find no evidence that anyone had been outside. In addition, as Smith spoke with police, her story about what happened changed several times, documents state.
