Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright arrested on alleged domestic assault

Boston Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright was arrested and charged with domestic assault and preventing a 911 call after an incident at his home outside Nashville.

Wright was taken into custody Friday night by authorities in Williamson County, Tenn., after an argument with his wife, Wright’s family attorney Alex Little told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday.

Wright was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic assault and, per Tennessee domestic violence laws, was held in custody for 12 hours.

In a statement, Little said Wright "did not raise his hand at anyone during the incident, and the situation was purely emotional."

Wright was released on Saturday after he posted $5,000 bail, according to Williamson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sharon Puckett. Wright is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Dec. 21.

Even if charges are ultimately dropped against Wright, he will still face an investigation from Major League Baseball and the likelihood of a suspension under its domestic violence policy enacted in September 2015.

Five players have been disciplined under the policy, serving suspensions ranging from 15 to 82 games and all accepting the bans without appeal. Only Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera – who received an 82-game suspension – ultimately faced charges.

Wright, a 33-year-old knuckleballer, was an All-Star in 2016 but underwent cartilage restoration surgery in May and made just five starts in 2017.

"We are aware of the incident involving Steven,” the Red Sox said in a statement. “This is certainly a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously. It is my understanding that both local police and Major League Baseball are looking into this and for that reason, the club won’t have any further comment at this time."

The full statement issued by Little on behalf of the Wright family:

"On Friday night, Steven was arrested at our home following a verbal argument, and the police charged him with domestic assault. Although he said things he deeply regrets, he did not raise his hand at anyone during the incident, and the situation was purely emotional. We are working together as a family to make our relationships stronger, and we ask that you respect our privacy as we do so."
