Herm Edwards officially named Arizona State head coach

USA TODAY Sports

Arizona State has officially named Herm Edwards its next head coach.

Herm Edwards has been hired to be the head coach at Arizona State.

The school announced the move, along with the formation of a "New Leadership Model," in a press release Sunday night.

Edwards was a longtime NFL coach, leading the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs from 2001-2008. He compiled a 54-74 record as a head coach before moving on to be an analyst with ESPN following his firing by the Chiefs after the 2008 season.

Edwards has not coached college football, however, since he was a defensive backs coach in the late 1980s with San Jose State.

"Passion for my faith, my family and my occupation as a football coach are the things that have driven me back to the grass," Edwards said in the statement released by the school.

"My personal commitment to build young men to be whole people through the game of football is completely in alignment with the vision President Michael Crow and Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson have for this program. I stand ready for the challenge of working with them to elevate Sun Devil Football. I am very excited and humbled to be the Arizona State head football coach."

Edwards' appointment, which awaits approval from the Arizona Board of Regents, comes in conjunction with the announcement of the "New Leadership Model." Per ASU, this "will be similar to an NFL approach using a general manager structure," with Edwards as the head.

The school describes this as a two-pronged approach to their football program that will have a sport side and an administrative side and will "allow the department to form a multi-layered method to the talent evaluation and recruiting processes, increase its emphasis on both student-athlete and coach development and retention, and provide a boost in resource allocation and generation."

"In the spirit of innovation, our vision for this program is to have a head coach who serves as a CEO and is the central leader with a collaborative staff around him that will elevate the performance of players and coaches on the field, in the classroom and in our community," Arizona State athletics director Ray Anderson, a former agent of Edwards, said in a statement.

"Equally important, the head coach will be a dynamic and tireless recruiter."

Edwards, 63, replaces Todd Graham, who was fired following a six-season run where the Sun Devils went 46-31.
