Michigan State basketball drops, stays in top 5 of both college hoops polls

Michigan State dropped in both college basketball polls this week.

The Spartans fell three spots to No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches poll and are No. 4 in the new Associated Press Top 25 after an 88-81 loss to No. 1 Duke on Tuesday in the Champions Classic in Chicago.

MSU improved to 2-1 this season on Sunday with a 93-71 victory over Stony Brook, a game in which sophomore Miles Bridges suffered a sprained left ankle and is listed as day-to-day by coach Tom Izzo.

Minnesota (steady at No. 14) and Purdue (up a spot to No. 18) are the only other Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25. The Gophers are No. 15 and Boilermakers No. 16 in the coaches rankings.

MSU heads to Portland, Oregon, this week for three games in the Phil Knight Invitational PK80 event. The Spartans open with DePaul on Thursday (11:30 p.m. ET/ESPN) and will face either Oregon or UConn in the second game on Friday. Their final game of the event will be Sunday.
