When a cyclist has to change a high-pressure tire at the side of the road, pumping it back up using a compact hand pump can be quite the hassle. That's why many bikers utilize compressed air canisters, although they're not reusable. Another alternative was unveiled at Interbike this week, however – the pocketable miniFumpa battery electric pump.

The Presta-valve-only device is small enough to fit in a jersey pocket, weighs 190 g (6.7 oz), and can inflate a single 700 x 23C tire up to a maximum pressure of 120 psi (8 bar). One hour-long USB charge of its lithium-polymer battery is reportedly sufficient for getting two such tires up to 100 psi each (7 bar). The inflation process takes about 40 to 50 seconds per tire.

Cyclists looking at replacing their stay-at-home floor pump might also be interested in the miniFumpa's slightly larger sibling, the standard Fumpa (pictured above). It accepts both Presta and Schrader valves, can inflate six tires on a single charge, has a digital readout, and can get a 700 x 23C tire up to 100 psi in just 20 to 25 seconds.

It's perhaps a little too big to just stuff in a pocket, though.

The miniFumpa is currently priced at US$129, while the Fumpa will cost you $179.

Very cool, would love to have the mini one for my rides to work, but the cost is just not realistic, at $50 I would consider it.

Thought the purpose of a bike was mainly excercise? Now your too lazy for a few strokes with a pump? I seriously don't get it. Cool pump though.
