The unofficial mayor of Hell and other Livingston County locals got to be on television when an episode of "The Daily Show" aired on cable network Comedy Central last month.

Part of a mock investigative news report was filmed in Hell and at Silver Lake in the Pinckney State Recreation Area in September.

The final product, a segment on "How to Make People Care about the Great Lakes," is available to watch online.

Hell, Michigan is in the spotlight again.

"The Daily Show" correspondent and Ann Arbor native Michael Kosta put on some devil horns and smiled as he was impeached as acting mayor by the unofficial mayor of Hell, after filming wrapped.

Kosta was appointed mayor of Hell for a day in a segment filmed in the Pinckney State Recreation Area just down the road from downtown Hell.

"The Daily Show "cast member Michael Kosta gets impeached as an appointed mayor of Hell, Michigan by the unofficial mayor of the incorporated hamlet, John Colone, as minister Emily Emerson looks on, Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017.

A film crew for the Comedy Central show shot three scenes on the shore of Silver Lake, a few miles away from the kitschy unincorporated hamlet of Hell.

In the scenes, Kosta was appointed acting mayor by business owner and unofficial mayor John Colone. Standing behind a podium at a fake press conference, Kosta's first order of business was to proclaim Silver Lake is now Silver Ocean, which he also celebrated with a ribbon cutting.

"I've always enjoyed doing stuff like that," Colone, who regularly appoints temporary mayors for fun and to promote the hamlet, said. "To be mayor, he's also got to become a property owner, so we'll make him a property owner, and then he'll be impeached."

Kosta purchased a deed to one inch of land for $1 and then got ousted after filming wrapped.

The cast and crew declined to comment on the episode or when it will air.

A segment for "The Daily Show" was shot on Silver Lake near the Pinckney State Recreation Area Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017. Cast member Michael Kosta pretends to give a press conference declaring the lake to be an ocean.

During the shoot, Kosta joked that lakes don't get enough respect, like oceans do, commenting on funding cuts for protecting lakes.

"If you drown in a lake, people think you're an idiot, but if you drown in an ocean, people think it's romantic," Kosta said, in character, during one take.

In another take, he chucked a plaque proclaiming Silver Lake to be an ocean into the lake. "Ahoy, lost at sea, eh?" he said.

Some local teens in the marching band and pom squad at Pinckney Community High School almost got a chance to be a part of the filming. They gathered at Screams, an ice cream parlor and Halloween-themed shop Colone owns, waiting for the crew to arrive.

However, filming started later than they had expected, and school officials made the call to take them back to class.

Pinckney senior Brandi Sterling came to take yearbook photos of the band and pom performing.

"We were out here to support the community and the school," Sterling said before finding out they would not be going to the filming. "We are showing what Pinckney Community Schools are about."

Band member Sean Miller, a senior at the high school, said they were planning to play "Hail to the Chief."

Pom squad member Sam Lamb, a high school senior took her disappointment with a grain of salt.

"That's okay, I get it. It's, like Hollywood time," Lamb said. "We're back to school and under their legal care, so I understand."
