Traffic switches at I-83, Mt. Rose: What's happened, what's next

To reach the new longer ramp, some drivers have to use a loop around, causing some confusion.

Drivers who travel through the Mount Rose Avenue interchange of Interstate 83 have seen some big changes recently.

Last week, crews closed the existing ramp to I-83 South and opened a new, longer one.

Drivers heading westbound on Mount Rose cannot turn left onto the ramp. That's caused some confusion.

Instead, they have to use a temporary loop around because of the ongoing construction. Drivers turn onto an access road near the York Water Company, go up to Green Hill Road and return to Mount Rose. Then they head east on Mount Rose to turn onto the new ramp.

Until more recently, crews had been working to the sides of the highway. But they are now ready to start reconstructing Interstate 83, and drivers will be seeing more traffic switches coming.

The next big change is when the state Department of Transportation opens the new ramp from I-83 North to Mount Rose Avenue, said Brian Moore, senior construction engineer with Michael Baker International. That ramp is in the area of Camp Betty Washington Road.

"We don't have a date for it yet," Moore said.
