The tournament is designed to find out the best golfer in Calhoun County. But instead, it turned into the Lakeview Alumni Championship.

The three golfers in the final group were all Lakeview graduates and all came into the final few holes with a chance to win before Andrew Walker pulled away to take the title in the 40th annual Calhoun County Amateur Golf Tournament at Binder Park Golf Course on Sunday.

MSU golfer and former Lakeview standout Andrew Walker won the 40th Cal-Am Golf Championship on Sunday at Binder Park Golf Course.

Walker, a 2016 Lakeview High graduate and a current golfer at Michigan State University, shot a 74 in his final round to win the tournament by one stroke, edging out former Lakeview golf standout Jared Multer, who was runner-up. Multer just finished up his collegiate career at Eastern Michigan University. Kory Roberts, another Lakeview grad in the final playing group, shot a 76 and finished fourth. Casey Bess had the best round of Day 2 with a 73 and climbed to take third overall.

“It’s been a few years since I have played in this,” Walker said. “It was good to come back home and win. It was good that I was able to hold it together in the final few holes and pull it out because I was playing against a couple of good golfers and a couple of good friends in Jared and Kory.”

Walker shot a 72 on the first day to have a two-day total of 146 to win the championship. Multer led after the first round with a 71 and had a lead with nine holes to play, but couldn’t hold it.

“I was up three on Andrew at the turn and up four on Kory. But I just fell apart from there. I started hitting it left and right, all over the place,” said Multer, who was runner-up in the Cal-Am last year. “I’m happy to see Andrew win. He’s a good friend and if you can’t win something like this yourself, you are always glad to see a friend take home the championship.”
