A Northeastern Regional Police officer shot a pit bull after it attacked him last week in East Manchester Township, according to the department's online log on Facebook.

The officer responded to the 200 block of Boxwood Road for a complaint of two dogs running loose in the area and chasing people. The dogs would not let residents leave their homes, police said.

As soon as the officer got out of his vehicle, one of the dogs, a pit bull, jumped on him and grabbed hold of his arm, biting him, police said.

"The dog would not let go of the officer and the officer was forced to fire his hand gun striking the dog," police said.

The dog let go of the officer and ran inside its house. The other dog was friendly and was taken into custody by a resident, police said.
