The Calhoun County Amateur Golf Tournament is getting up there in years, now in its 40th summer. But it is a couple of youngsters who were the talk of the tournament on the first day.

Former Lakeview standout Jared Multer shot a 71 to lead the annual Cal-Am after the first round on Saturday at Binder Park Golf Course. Close behind is another former and current Spartan as Andrew Walker was second with a 72. Kory Roberts had a 73 for third.

Current Michigan State University golfer Andrew Walker hits from the bunker during action in the first round of the Cal-Am Championship at Binder Park Golf Course on Saturday.

Walker, also a former Lakeview standout, is getting set for his second year as a Spartan golfer at Michigan State University.

“It is always nice to come play in this event, always a lot of familiar faces. It’s a fun event,” Walker said. “I got to play with my brother today and will get to play with Jared tomorrow and he’s a good friend.

“It’s nice to be in this setting and be home. A nice way to test your game out, which is important because I’ll be heading to Michigan State in the next week here.”

Multer, who graduated from Lakeview in 2012, just finished up his collegiate career at Eastern Michigan University. He says coming back to Binder Park is always a treat.

"This is always one of my favorite events of the year. I know all the guys," Multer said. "I worked out here at Binder for three years in the pro shop, so this is a special event."

Although he is leading after the first day, Multer says he hopes to play better golf in the final round on Sunday.

"I got off to a slow start, had three straight bogeys early. But in the middle of the round I played pretty strong," Multer said. "I think I will have to play better tomorrow. It's going to take a strong round of golf to win this tomorrow. With the people in the running, it will take a score in the 60s to be in the hunt."

The leader in the Super Senior Division was George Zollner with a 69 with Chris Kallgren getting a 70 in the Senior Division.

Stacy Raymond had an 87 in the ladies division.
