Republican Infiltrates NYC WFP's Primary

The New York Working Families Party (WFP) confirmed that a Republican Candidate used the "Opportunity to Ballot" Tactic to create an unexpected Primary for the Party's Southern Brooklyn's 43rd City Council District Seat.

Primary using Opportunity to Ballot, form of Petition. The form of a Petition requesting an Opportunity to Write-In the Name of an Undesignated Candidate(s) at a Primary Election shall conform to the requirements for a Designating Petition

The WFP had endorsed Democrat Justin Brannan and expected to award him Row E on the November Ballot.

But GOP Candidate Liam McCabe collected Petition Signatures from some Three Dozen Registered WFP Members, well over the 5% required, and Submitted them to the Board of Elections.

As a result, the few hundred WFP Voters in the District will be able to Write-In whatever Candidate they want in the September Primary, creating a Free-for-All, and forcing Brannan, considered the Frontrunner for the Seat, to divert Resources to hold onto the Party's Ballot Line.

Several sources suggested that McCabe might have pursued the Working Families Party Line to boost the chances of Brannan's Democratic Primary rival, the Rev. Khader El-Yateem, who unsuccessfully sought the WFP's backing earlier this year.
