Davids Greater Son (Mark 12:35-37)

I. Introduction. A. Orientation. 1. Last time, saw a question, a. From someone more intelligent b. Than the others. (i) Who studied the Law, (ii) Discovered what God really after, (iii) And asked Jesus an educated question: (iv) What greatest commandment? 2. Jesus answer a. Agreed with his assessment: (i) To love Lord . . . (ii) To love neighbor as self. b. These were greater (i) Than all burnt offerings and sacrifices, (a) Than all ceremonies, (b) Than anything else (c) You might want to give to the Lord, (ii) Because this is what He commands (a) His goal in redemption. (1) We were going wrong way (2) We were hating God, (3) And our neighbor. (4) Werent loving them. (b) Jesus came to reverse all this: (1) To show us right way by His example, (2) To give us power to love by His Spirit. (c) This is how we can know converted: (1) When love God, our neighbor, (2) Even our enemy, (3) As He commands. (d) We may not be able (1) To do perfectly in this life (2) But that will be our goal, (3) And will be grieved when we fail.

3. But remember: a. Knowing this isnt enough, b. Even agreeing. (i) This scribe knew, (ii) Even agreed with Jesus. (iii) He wasnt far from kingdom, (iv) But wasnt in it either. c. Why? (i) Hadnt trusted Jesus, (ii) Didnt have Spirit. (iii) If had, then would love Jesus in this way. (iv) Make sure you not only agree, (v) Make sure have this love in your heart, (vi) By trusting Jesus. B. Preview. 1. Jesus now had a question for them : a. How can the Christ be Davids Son (i) When David himself calls Him Lord. (ii) Father always greater than son. (iii) But not in this case. Why? b. It isnt mentioned here, (i) But Matthew records: (a) No one was able to answer Him a word, (b) Nor did anyone dare from that day on (c) To ask Him another question (22:46). (ii) They didnt understand who Messiah would be: (a) Knew Son of David, (b) But thought merely military leader (b) To deliver from Romans. (iii) They didnt know (a) His person, authority and kingdom (b) Would be far more reaching. 2. This morning, lets consider that a. Jesus is the Son of David. b. But that He is much more: He is the Son of God. c. And so has a much greater kingdom. II. Sermon. A. First, Jesus is the Son of David.

3 1. After Fall, Lord began to reveal who Son would be. a. First, as seed of woman who crush head of serpent (Gen. 3:15). b. Next, as seed of Abraham (Gen. 22:18). c. Later, as already read, Son of David (2 Sam. 7). 2. God said would establish Davids throne forever. a. Jews may have thought (i) Unbroken line of succession to throne of Israel. (ii) Or that if broken, (iii) Lord would restore indefinitely. b. But really pointed (i) To a particular Son: Jesus. (ii) Jesus is this Son of David. (a) This what Matthew sets out to prove, (b) Which why includes genealogy in His Gospel: The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham (Matt. 1:1). (c) Jesus has right to throne of Israel. c. There no question that Messiah would be Son of David. (i) The real question is, (ii) How can Jesus be the Son of David, (iii) And yet be greater than David? d. This brings to second point: He is more, much more. B. He not only Son of David according to His human lineage He Son of God. 1. The Lord showed His people a. Who Messiah would be, b. But they apparently missed c. Most amazing part: would be God in human flesh. (i) Easy for us to be critical (a) Since we look back at OT (b) Through lens of the New. (ii) Yet, was clearly there. (a) For example, Jews knew Christ born in Bethlehem: (1) When Herod heard wise men, (2) Was troubled, so sent for chief priests and scribes (3) And asked where Messiah would be born. (4) They knew, In Bethlehem in Judea (Matt. 2:5), (5) Because of Micahs prophecy. (6) Yet missed fact Messiah eternal, and so God. (7) Micah writes, But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to

4 be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity (Micah 5:2). (b) They knew Messiah would rule on throne of David, (1) But missed that He would be the Mighty God, the Father of Eternity. (2) Isaiah, For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this (Isa. 9:6-7). (c) Perhaps couldnt conceive (1) How both could be true: (2) Son of David and Son of God. (iii) If they had understood, (a) They could have answered Jesus question: (b) Messiah is God in human flesh (c) And so greater than David. 2. They realized something about this a. Which is why they wouldnt ask any more questions. b. Also understood something of what Jesus was claiming: (i) When on trial, high priest will ask Him, (ii) Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One? (iii) When He answers yes, (a) They will accuse Him of blasphemy. (b) This Son of David is greater than David (c) Because He also Son of God. c. But lets move finally to the implications: C. Since He is more than merely a son of David, His kingdom also much larger than Israel. 1. What did David mean a. When he wrote, (i) The Lord said to my Lord, (ii) Sit at My right hand, (iii) Until I put your enemies (iv) Beneath Your feet? b. And when is Lord intending to fulfill this?

5 (i) Important to understand, (ii) Since this one of most encouraging prophecies in Bible. 2. Many dispensationalists believe a. Will be fulfilled in the Millennial kingdom: They believe that (i) After Jesus returns, (ii) Raptures His church, (iii) Then deals with Israel for seven years, (iv) He will set up world-wide kingdom (v) Where will rule and reign with saints (vi) For a thousand years. b. They believe this prophecy (i) Points to that time, (ii) Since thats when His rule begins, (iii) In their understanding. 3. But Lord has told us a. Hes already ruling b. And Father already subduing. (i) Author to Hebrews says (a) This ruling and subduing (b) Began after ascension. (c) Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, waiting from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET (10:11-13). (ii) Jesus went to cross and died, (a) Was buried, (b) Three days later, rose again, (c) And after forty days ascended. (iii) This was coronation day, (a) When began to rule (b) With promise that all enemies (c) Will be subdued under feet. c. Jesus was not only promised a people, (i) But sovereignty for His work. (ii) Paul writes, He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and

6 gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all (Eph. 1:20-23). (iii) Again, For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:9-11). d. Jesus is reigning now (i) And will reign (ii) Until all His enemies are subdued. (iii) The last enemy is death, (iv) Which will vanquish when returns. (v) Paul, For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death (1 Cor. 15:25-26). (a) When He returns, (b) Will raise the dead (c) Conquering death (d) And will translate the living (e) And gather all for final judgment. (vi) His reign isnt just in future its now. e. Same is true of subjection of His enemies (i) Its been going on (ii) From ascension to present. f. How does Father subdue them? (i) Primarily through Gospel. (ii) Thats what Great Commission all about: (a) All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Matt. 28:18-20). (b) He does through evangelism and missions. (iii) This greatest part of our spiritual warfare. (a) We need to overcome personal attacks (b) Of our enemies world, flesh and devil (c) So can engage this battle (d) Reaching lost with Gospel. (1) Its only through this (2) That Lord will restrain sin, change hearts (3) And advance His kingdom.

7 (iv) Instead of looking for future time (a) Where Lord brings kingdom in one fell swoop, (b) Understand He wants to fulfill this through us today (c) As we meet for worship (1) To bear witness to truth of Gospel, (2) And gain strength to fulfill purpose of our existence (d) Through fellowship (1) As we encourage and build one another (2) Through our faith, love and gifts (e) Through prayer (1) As we meet to bombard throne of grace (2) With requests that Lord might advance kingdom (3) And use us (f) And through evangelism (1) As we actually reach out to others around us (2) And love them by giving them the word of life. (v) The fact that Jesus is reigning now (a) Should have a profound impact (b) On how much effort we put into this. (c) Should also give us confidence (d) That He will be with us (e) To give success in all we do (f) To extend His kingdom. 4. One last thing, a. If you havent trusted this greater Son of David (i) Who offers Himself to you as Savior and Lord, (ii) You will have to face Him one day as your Judge. b. Bible says every knee will bow (i) Either willingly or unwillingly. (ii) Bow willingly now. (iii) Trust Him now. (iv) And He will receive you into His family (v) And give you an eternal home. e. Life doesnt go on forever. (i) You need to think about your future. (ii) May the Lord give you grace (iii) To trust Jesus, turn from your sins (iv) So that you will be safe.
