Adoption fees waived at Farmington animal shelter

FARMINGTON — A line had formed to get into the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter today about an hour after it announced that adoption fees would be waived for all animals this week.

More than 90 volunteers assisted the staff as they worked to pair adoptable animals with families.

The adoption fees were waived thanks to a donation from an anonymous donor that was matched by the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter Foundation. The foundation's shoe drive earlier this year raised $1,300. That money was used to waive the adoption fees.

Many of the dogs and cats were adopted within the first hour. Shelter director Stacie Voss said new animals will be placed in the cages throughout the week as the pets are adopted.

"This is our biggest time with the most intake," she said.

During June, 786 dogs and cats entered the shelter.

Karen Bayless, the vice chairperson of the foundation, said they are hoping to have at least 250 animals adopted this week.

"If we adopt them all out, I'll be perfectly happy," she said.
