Report: Mets minor-league pitcher Logan Taylor hurt after being attacked by homeless man

New York Mets minor-league pitcher Logan Taylor suffered a concussion and needed staples in his head after he was attacked by a homeless man Saturday in Salt Lake City, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Monday afternoon.

Salt Lake City police detective Greg Wilking told the newspaper that Joshua Cruz demanded Logan’s wallet as the pitcher was walking down the street, hitting him with a tire iron. According to the report, Cruz also carried a sock full of rocks.

Logan needed six or seven staples in the back of his head, Pedro Lopez, the Mets’ Triple-A manager for the Las Vegas 51s, said. Taylor, who was placed on the disabled list, was able to attend Sunday’s game. Las Vegas was visiting the Salt Lake City Bees.

The newspaper said Cruz was arrested Saturday on charges of aggravated robbery and failure to stop at the command of law enforcement.

“At the very time the call was coming in, an officer that was right in the area was flagged down by people, and he tried to run away,” Wilking said. “He was chased. He was told to drop the items he had, and then he turned around on the officer, and that’s when another officer came on the scene and they used a Taser to take him into custody.”

Cruz was in jail on $2,500 bail as of Monday afternoon, the Review-Journal reported.

Taylor was taken by the Mets in the 11th round of the 2012 draft. He has a 4.46 ERA this season, spent mostly with Las Vegas.

The Mets said in a statement: “It’s in the hands of the police now and we can’t comment further.”
