The sinkhole measures about 5-inches to 6-inches in diameter and is up to 44 inches deep, the news release states.

PennDOT closed the New Park Road bridge over Alum Creek on Wednesday after a sinkhole was found on a roadway approach to the span, a news release states.

"A portion of the surrounding asphalt pavement measuring 4 feet by 4 feet appears to have subsided between 1 to 2 inches," it says.

In addition to the sinkhole, a crack in the wing wall of the span might need to be addressed, the agency said.

The span was built in 1908 and carries about 1,200 vehicles a day.
