A Staten Island, New York football star who worked as a football coach and briefly played for Michigan State University is facing narcotics charges after an undercover drug buy.

The New York Daily News reported that Diego Oquendo, 32, who played for two seasons with the Spartans under coach John L. Smith, was arrested in Rossville, about three miles from Tottenville High School.

Two other people — Terry Kinnicut, 38, and Danielle Messerschmidt, 22 — also were arrested in connection with the incident, and police confiscated drugs and equipment from Kinnicut's home, the Daily News reported.

According to New York court records, Oquendo was arraigned on two felony counts and one misdemeanor, including third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, punishable by up to nine years in prison; criminal possession of narcotics with intent to sell, and the misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance. A judge set bail at $10,000.

He is scheduled to appear in Richmond Criminal Court on Tuesday.

Oquendo played 11 games predominantly on special teams for John L. Smith as a freshman in 2005, returning four kickoffs for 86 yards and making three tackles, and saw action in three games in 2006. He was listed on MSU's preseason roster in 2007 but did not play a down in Mark Dantonio's first season and was not listed on the roster of Champs Sports Bowl.

After leaving MSU, Oquendo played at Augustana University in Iowa, where he earned an education degree.
