'Severely battered' trooper killed boyfriend during fight

An eight-year veteran of the Delaware State Police killed her boyfriend after "a violent physical altercation" Sunday night, according to police investigating the incident. 

State Police released news early Monday morning that one of their own was found "severely battered" and her boyfriend was found shot in the upper torso. 

The events unfolded Sunday when police were called to the 3200 block of Champions Drive at 11:12 p.m. to reports of gunshots. New Castle County Police and DSP responded and learned that sometime during the fight the trooper, unidentified in a police news release, got her service handgun and shot Maurice Ifill, 43, of Owings Mills, Maryland.

Ifill has a record of domestic violence charges filed against him in Maryland.

Both were taken to the hospital and Ifill was declared dead. His body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences where an autopsy will be performed. 

An off-duty officer was found severely beaten and a man was found shot inside a residence on Champions Drive Sunday night.

The investigation is ongoing.
