Thursday’s prep roundup: Berkley golf stays on a roll
Berkley’s golf team is still undefeated, after scoring a 169 in its two-stroke win over Birmingham Groves on Thursday at the Detroit Golf Club’s North course.
Jake Radom’s even-par 36 led the way for Berkley (4-0, 3-0 OAA White). Aiden Kelly shot a 41, while Joey Wolberg (44) and Mike Mercier (48) were in the top 10 on the leaderboard.
“This was a little bit more of a nailbiter than I thought it was going to be,” Berkley coach Scott Baltes said. “We had a five-stroke advantage right out of the first group. We just want to build up a little bit more consistency. All three of my other guys are capable of shooting low-40s. I’m not displeased with how we’re playing so far. I just want the kids to have fun. We just had one or two bad holes and that’s all it takes in golf. The difference between a 41 and a 45 is not much.”
Colin Christie led Groves (2-1, 1-1) with a 41. Jack Wolf had a 42, while Nathan Brink and Jack McPafferty each shot a 44.
“Groves is one of the more consistent teams,” Baltes said. “The last tournament we were in, that’s exactly how they were. They’re a great team. I knew it was going to be a close match today. Their consistency is what keeps them in every match. They’re a very young team. They’re an up-and-coming team.”
On Friday, Berkley and Groves play an 18-hole tournament with all six league teams.
Baltes said the expecations for Berkley are simple.
“Just playing smart,” he said. “Not taking chances that aren’t necessary. Just all-around consistent golf is what I’m looking for. These guys know how to golf. They know what I’m looking for.”
Baseball
Grosse Pointe South 8, New Baltimore Anchor Bay 0: Cam Shook threw a complete game shutout, giving up five hits and a walk, while striking out six for South (7-8, 2-4 MAC Red). Nate Budziak was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Logan Mico was 3-for-3 with two RBIs for South.
Sterling Heights Stevenson 5, Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 4: Garrett Navarra (3-for-4) hit the go-ahead solo home run in the top of the seventh, while Mario Camilletti (2-for-3) hit a 2-run home run and Todd Papperd hit a 2-run single for Stevenson (14-2, 6-0 MAC Red). Austin Frederick hit a 2-run home run for Chippewa Valley.
Softball
Warren Woods Tower 3, Warren Mott 2: Hannah Chaffee threw a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out six for Woods Tower (6-6, 2-1 MAC Gold). Leeann Wilson was 3-for-3 and Richelle Michalak was 1-for-3 with an RBI double and Alaina Holloway had the winning RBI for Tower.
