Name of Hopewell Twp. man killed in police shoot-out released

The York County Coroner's Office said 79-year-old Robert Becker was the man killed in a police-involved shooting early Monday morning at his home in Hopewell Township.

An autopsy on Becker's body will be performed at Lehigh Valley Hospital  on Wednesday morning, according to Coroner Pam Gay.

Gay added that Becker's next-of-kin had been notified of hsi death.

Becker shot at state police troopers early Monday morning died from his injuries after police returned fire. Becker, described as having mental health issues, was allegedly threatening violence Monday against law enforcement and emergency personnel, according to Pennsylvania State Police Public Information Officer Brent Miller.

A man who shot at state police troopers in Hopewell Township early Monday morning died from his injuries after police returned fire, officials said.

At about 3:37 a.m., York County 911 received a threatening call from Becker, and state police troopers responded to his home in the 200 block of Hollow Road, Hopewell Township, according to Miller.

The troopers made contact with Becker at about 4:06 a.m., according to a release. He allegedly fired a weapon at the troopers, and the troopers fired back, striking the man.

Becker later died from his injuries sustained in the shooting, according to the release.

No troopers were injured in the incident.

At 9 a.m., a body was removed from the home's front porch and placed in the White Rose ambulance.

Nearby Hollow Road resident Denny Miser said he was "very sad" to hear of the man's death but did not know him personally. Miser's wife, Karen Jarboe, said she heard the shots around 4 a.m.

"I didn't even move," she said. "It's a very distinctive sound. This is a big deal here ... nothing happens in this neighborhood."

Another Hollow Road resident, Donna Kerns, said the shooting was "too close to home. It's crazy."

The State Police Major Case team is investigating, according to Miller.
