Chris Long, Devin McCourty talk not visiting White House

Michelle R. Martinelli

There are a number of New England Patriots fans who aren't happy with the misconception that they all support President Donald Trump simply because Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft are friends with him.

So they - along with Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty and now-Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long, two of the six players opting to skip or considering skipping the team's visit to the White House - made a video explaining their emotions during the crazy comeback in the Super Bowl and why their views don't align with the president's or his administration's agenda.

McCourty and Long also elaborated on why they have decided not to go to Washington.

"Right away, I knew I wasn't going because it was something I thought about before we even won the game," McCourty says in the Green Stripe News video.

"(When) my son grows up - and I believe the legacy of our president is going to be what it is - I don't want him to say, 'Hey Dad, why'd you go when you knew the right thing was to not go?'" Long added.

Fans in the video expressed their political views - although one said, "For me, it's not political, it's moral." - as well as their admiration for McCourty and Long and any other Patriots player opting not to go to the White House.
