Trieu: Michigan targets long, athletic DB Myles Sims

Michigan signed two players from Georgia in the 2017 class, defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon and running back Kurt Taylor, and that was without the help of any clear ties to the state of Michigan in either case.

If the Wolverines are to land one of the best players in the Peach State in the 2018 class, Atlanta Westlake’s Myles Sims, they would have more familiarity with Michigan and the Midwest on their side. Sims, a nearly 6-foot-3 four-star cornerback ranked as a top-100 player in the country by Scout, was born in Detroit and lived there until first grade.

He returned to Michigan and visited the Wolverines in early March, spent the better part of two days on campus, and said it was the best visit he has been on. On the heels of that, he named Michigan as part of a top group of schools that also includes Florida, Georgia, Clemson and LSU.

He plans to return to Michigan and then make a commitment in April.

“I got to see the whole campus, academics – all that,” Sims said. “They have the No. 1 business school in America, and also Coach Harbaugh, he's a top coach in the entire conference. Coach Harbaugh is a players’ coach and he connected well with me."

The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb had an opportunity to see Sims in person at the Nike Opening Regional in Atlanta last weekend. He saw a kid whose size and athleticism make him a high-end prospect.

“He is 6-foot-3, 179 pounds and really fluid,” Webb said. “You wonder if kids as long as him are coordinated, if they have loose hips. The answer for Sims is yes, all of the above. He showed ability to break on the ball exceptionally well. Has really good football speed, a really good jump-ball guy. He wants to be a corner and looks like he could play it at the college level. If that doesn't work out he could be an outstanding safety.”

Of the five schools he named as his top group, Sims has not identified any as a leader. However, with ties to Michigan, a good visit, and the Wolverines’ recent success in Georgia, he is one prospect the Wolverines are in good position with as a decision approaches.

Four-star weekend visitor

Kamryn Babb, a highly-regarded wide receiver from St. Louis Christian Brothers College, will visit Michigan on Friday and Saturday.

Babb (6-1, 190 pounds) has a lengthy offer list that includes Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, and many others. He is also visiting the Spartans this week.

“One of the big things for me is being comfortable,” Babb said. “I feel like I can play my game wherever I go and the offensive style will fit into it. I want to focus on what school is best for me outside of football, what school can help me succeed after football. You only get to play football for so long.”

He plans to cut his list later in the offseason, but does not yet have a timeline for a decision date.

Sophomore running back offered

Michigan offered Roswell (Ga.) Blessed Trinity class of 2019 running back Steele Chambers this week. Chambers (6-1, 210 pounds) rushed for 1,486 yards on offense and intercepted six passes while making 66 tackles as a defensive back.

He was an all-state selection as well as regional offensive player of the year.

Vanderbilt is the only other school to have offered.

Chambers also carries a 3.9 GPA in the classroom.
