Wednesday’s roundup: Roth’s gem lifts Stevenson

Eric Coughlin
Special to The Detroit News

Sterling Heights Stevenson baseball coach Joe Emanuele usually plans on using four or five pitchers per game.

On Wednesday, he only needed one, as junior pitcher Zach Roth threw a five-hit, 71-pitch shutout to lead Sterling Heights Stevenson (3-0) to an 8-0 rout of Grosse Pointe North.

“Zach kept them off-balance,” Emanuele said. “This time of year we don’t push our starters over 80 pitches, so we’re normally bringing someone else in in the fourth inning, but Zach kept us from making any changes”

Junior catcher Mitchell Shamblin went 2-for-3 with two runs, senior designated hitter Luke McGuire went 2-for-4 and senior shortstop Mario Camilletti chipped in with three hits and two RBIs for Sterling Heights Stevenson.

Sterling Heights Stevenson was up 4-0 in the sixth inning, but Grosse Pointe North had the bases loaded with two outs and its cleanup hitter at the plate. Roth got out of the jam by forcing a pop-up, then Stevenson put the game out of reach with four seventh-inning runs.

The game caps a great opening week of the season for Sterling Heights Stevenson. Earlier in the week they beat Rochester on a walkoff and Birmingham Brother Rice in a seventh-inning comeback.

Emanuele mentioned defense and baserunning as possible areas of improvement for his team but overall was positive about the season outlook.

“I think we’re on the right track,” Emanuele said.

Sterling Heights Stevenson heads to Florida next week as a team for spring break, where it will scrimmage. It hosts Utica on April 10.

Grosse Pointe North has a doubleheader at home against Alpena on April 7.
