Michigan State’s Tom Izzo was the fifth-highest paid coach in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, according to a study released Wednesday by USA Today Sports.

The 22nd-year head coach’s total pay of $4,251,751 going into the 2016-17 season ranks top among Big Ten coaches. Izzo’s compensation trails only Louisville’s Rick Pitino ($7,769,200), Kentucky’s John Calipari ($7,435,376), Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski ($5,550,475) and Kansas’ Bill Self ($4,932,626).

MSU gives Izzo $3,582,751, which includes his base salary, any deferred payments earned annually, shoe and apparel use, television/radio/other media appearances and personal appearances among others.

He also receives $669,000 in “other pay,” which is considered “income listed on the coach’s most recently available, self-reported athletically related outside-income report.”

Izzo’s maximum bonus is $350,000, which does not include amounts he receives from Nike if the Spartans make the Final Four ($25,000) and if they win a national championship ($50,000).

Michigan’s John Beilein ranks seventh overall and second among Big Ten coaches at $3,370,000 total pay. He also has a $250,000 maximum bonus.
