Madison Nichole Krumrine, who was missing since March 23, was found safe and unharmed in southern Maryland.

Police located 16-year-old Madison Krumrine of West Manheim Township, and returned to her family Wednesday morning, according to a West Manheim Township Police Department social media post Wednesday.

West Manheim Police investigators developed a lead that resulted in Madison being found safe and unharmed in southern Maryland.

Madison had been missing since March 23.

According to the post by West Manheim Chief Timothy Hippensteel, investigators located a handwritten note at her home indicating she left voluntarily, the post states.

There were never any leads that suggested Madison was abducted, and it was confirmed once she was located that she had left on her own free will with the intent to run away from home, according to the post.

Pennsylvania State Police, U.S. Marshalls, FBI and multiple law enforcement agencies in two states were involved in the investigation early on, the post states.

"False and misleading information" that was not authorized by police was shared with the public via social media, which Hippensteel said resulted in "numerous baseless tips" and wasted investigators' time.
