JOHNS ISLAND, SC - The Michigan State women’s golf team shot two of its best rounds of the year on Monday at the Briar’s Creek Invitational in Johns Island, South Carolina. The Spartans shot a season-low 288 in the opening round and then a 296, their third lowest of the season, in round two to finish the day 8-over par 594. MSU currently sits in seventh place in the 18-team field that includes 10 teams in the Golfstat top 50.

Senior greens fees are set to increase at three of Livonia's public golf courses later this year.

“I think we did a lot of good things today to put ourselves in a good position,” MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. “We shot a nice round of even-par golf in the morning and then held in nicely in the afternoon when the wind picked up.

“I hope the players are gaining confidence and the things we’ve been working on are starting to pay off. There was a lot of good stuff today.”

The Spartans were led on Monday by freshman Allyson Geer, who currently sits in ninth place at 2-under par 142 for the tournament after a career-low 4-under par 68 in the opening round and a then a 2-over par 74 in the afternoon.

The highlight of the day came courtesy of Geer as she recorded a hole-in-one on the 150-yard, par-3 17th hole in the second round.
“It’s exciting to have a hole-in-one,” Slobodnik-Stoll said. “As much golf as we play, it’s incredible how rare it is to have a hole-in-one. Ally hit a great shot.”

Geer started the day on the 10th hole and after going 1-over her first nine, she recorded four birdies and an eagle on the front nine to card a 68.

Katie Sharp shot an even-par 72 in the opening round and then a 2-over par 74 to sit at 2-over 146 in 27th place.

Sarah Burnham and Paz Marfa Sans both fired a pair of 2-over par 74s in the two rounds to sit at 4-over 148 for the tournament and are tied for 41st place.

Carolyn Markley is 13-over par 157 (75-82).

Florida, which is ranked sixth by both Golfweek and Golfweek, leads the tournament at 13-under par 563 (277-286).

MSU is five shots back of Auburn and six shots behind No. 15 Miami and Louisville, which are both tied for fourth place.

Laura Fuenfstueck of the College of Charleston leads the tournament at 7-under par 137.

The tournament will resume on Tuesday with the final round beginning at 9 a.m.
