Packers make rare free-agent splash with Martellus Bennett

USA TODAY Sports
New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett (88) reacts as he leaves the field following the win against the Denver Broncos at Sports Authority Field.

The Green Bay Packers have given Aaron Rodgers a new weapon at tight end.

Martellus Bennett agreed to terms on a multi-year contract with the Packers on Friday, a person familiar with the move told USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

The move marks a rare dip into free agency for Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who has prioritized drafting and developing in-house talent over making splashy free agent signings.

Bennett had 55 catches for 701 yards and seven touchdowns for the New England Patriots last season while fighting through injuries. But after helping lead the franchise to a Super Bowl LI win, he confirmed he would not be returning to the franchise and instead look to his options on the open market.

Jared Cook already intended to move on from the Packers, a person who was familiar with the tight end's plans told Pelissero. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Cook had not detailed his plans.
