Some residents who live near the highway have been looking forward to the sound barriers going up to help reduce the noise.

Crews have been moving dirt, constructing ramps and building bridges. Supports for the sound barrier panels have gone up more recently, and work to add the panels began this week.

Crews have been working on the $58.3 million project to make over the I-83 interchange for nearly two years. It's expected to fix major traffic problems, help ease congestion and improve safety. The work is expected to continue until the end of 2018.

This summer, crews plan to start working on the mainline of I-83, said Mike Crochunis, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. It will include widening the roadway and working on the bridges on I-83.
