Michigan State women's golf sixth in Florida invite

The Michigan State women’s golf team shot a 17-over par 305 in the final round of the Central District Invitational on Tuesday in Port St. Lucie, Florida, to end the tournament tied for sixth place. The Spartans were 45-over par (304-300-305-909) in the 54-hole, 14-team event at the St. Lucie Trail Golf Club.

No. 7 Furman won the tournament with an even-par 864 (282-289-293), finishing 23 strokes ahead of second-place Memphis.

Freshman Allyson Geer and junior Sarah Burnham were the top Spartan finishers as both ended the tournament 8-over 224 to tie for 20th place.

Geer shot a 74 and 73 in rounds one and two, respectively, but fell out of the top-10 with a 6-over 78 on Tuesday.

Burnham improved on her first and second round scores of 75 and 76, respectively, with a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to card the lowest round of the day by a Spartan.

Junior Katie Sharp placed 27th. She Shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday to finish the event with an 11-over 227 (77-74-76).

Carolyn Markley got off to a hot start on Tuesday as she began the day on No. 10 and birdied holes 13, 14 and 15 and then 18 to put her at 4-under par after nine. Unfortunately, she finished the day with a 9-over par 81 and was 21-over par 237 (79-77-81) for the tournament.

Freshman Paz Marfa Sans had her best round of the tournament with a 5-over par 77 on Tuesday. She was 24-over par for the tournament (78-85-77-240).

Logan Otter and Catherine McEvoy competed as individuals for MSU. Otter was 19-over par (76-81-78-235) and McEvoy 24-over (85-79-76-240).

The Spartans will now be off until March 20-21 when they travel to Johns Island, South Carolina, for the Briar’s Creek Invitational.
