MSU women's golf: Spartans 7th after 2 Rounds of the Central District Invitational

PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida - The Michigan State women’s golf team played the first two rounds of the Central District Invitational on Monday at the St. Lucie Trail Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Through 36 holes, the Spartans are in seventh place in the 14-team field with a combined 28-over par 604, after shooting an opening round 16-over par 304 and second round 12-over par 300.

Seventh-ranked Furman is the only team under par and leads the tournament with a 5-under 571. Louisville (9-over par 585), Augusta University (20-over par 596), North Carolina (23-over par 599) and Memphis (24-over par 600) round out the current top five.

Freshman Allyson Geer led all Spartans on Monday with a two-round total 3-over par 147, which puts her in a tie for seventh place. Geer led the Spartans in the opening round with a 2-over par 74. After a 2-over front nine, Geer was even on the back with two bogies and two birdies.

Geer had three birdies in the second round, including two in a row to start the back nine.

Juniors Sarah Burnham and Katie Sharp both shot 7-over par 151’s and are in a tie for 25th place. Burnham shot a 75 in round one and followed it with a 76 on the second 18 holes.

Sharp rebounded from a first-round 5-over par 77 to shoot a 2-over par 74, with the help of an MSU second-round best four birdies.

Sophomore Carolyn Markley shot a 12-over par 156 (79-77) and freshman Paz Marfa Sans a 19-over par 163 (78-85).

Logan Otter (76-81-157) and Catherine McEvoy (85-79-164) are competing individually for the Spartans.

Taylor Totland of Furman and Lauren Hartlage of Louisville share the individual lead at 4-under par.

Tuesday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
