A Penn State student was charged Wednesday by police near State College where a September car crash killed fellow student Byron Markle, according to a report from the Centre Daily Times.

Byron Markle hits out of a bunker at Grandview Club in Dover Township in July 2014. The 20-year-old went to college at Penn State. He died in September after a car crash. The driver, a fellow Penn State student, was charged in connection with the crash.

Markle, 20, of York, was a Dallastown graduate and an "avid golfer," according to his obituary.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, the news report states.

The driver, 22-year-old Tyler Fasig of Leesport, is facing multiple charges including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI and homicide by vehicle, online court records show.

Fasig had a preliminary arraignment Wednesday. He was released on unsecured bail of $25,000, records state. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Jan. 25.

The crash happened on Sept. 9 when a Nissan Pathfinder Fasig was driving rolled over in the area of Blue Course Drive and North Atherton Street, the Centre Daily Times reported.

Fasig took a turn too fast and had to make a wide turn, but the car flipped on its side, the newspaper reported.

Ferguson Township Police spoke with Fasig after the crash and could smell a faint odor of alcohol on him, the report states. According to a criminal complaint, Fasig told police he'd been drinking multiple beverages during the day but wanted to go home to pick something up.

Markle offered to drive, but Fasig said he should drive because he'd seen Markle take "multiple shots," according to the Centre Daily Times.

In the days shortly after the crash, students mourned Markle's death during a candlelight vigil at the same intersection.
