Lansing State Journal

No. 14 Michigan State volleyball team wrapped up its 2016 regular season with a 3-1 victory (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21) over Iowa on Saturday night.

MSU is now 24-8, 13-7 Big Ten, and the Hawkeyes finish their season with a 19-13 mark, 9-11 in Conference play.

Michigan State volleyball coach Cathy George

Brooke Kranda contributed a season-best 17 kills while establishing new career bests in digs (7) and tying her career high with five blocks. Chloe Reinig had 12 kills along with six blocks and five digs, while middles Allyssah Fitterer and Alyssa Garvelink each had seven blocks. Fitterer also added eight kills, and Garvelink hit a team-best .357 on seven terminations. Abby Monson established a new career best with 25 digs.

Lauren Brobst had 17 kills for the home team, while Meghan Buzzerio added 10 kills.

MSU snapped a three-match skid, its longest losing streak of the season. MSU is one of three teams to finish .500 or better in each of the last six Big Ten seasons.

“We played Iowa in the first and final matches of the season, and both of these teams were a lot different than when we met back in September," MSU coach Cathy George said. "Iowa is vastly improved and very, very scrappy - we knew that they would fight and battle us every point. I'm happy that we ended the regular season on a high note - and now we just have to wait for the selection show.”

The Spartans will await the NCAA selection show at 9 p.m. Sunday to learn their fate in the upcoming Division I volleyball championship. The show will air live on ESPNU.

MSU will be looking for its sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid, the second-longest streak in school history.
