North George Street in York has been reopened after an underground fire Sunday evening.

The fire started around 7:20 p.m. underneath North George Street between Market and Philadelphia streets, York City Fire and Rescue Services Assistant Chief Pat Rose said.

A fire on a power line blew a manhole cover on North George Street about a foot off the ground, where it landed back in place, Rose said.

Met-Ed is working on East Philadelphia Street and had charged the line when the fire started, Rose said. Firefighters on scene used a carbon dioxide extinguisher to put out the small fire.

Crews shut down the line, let the smoke clear and shortly reopened the street. There were no injuries or reports of power outage, Rose said.
