Residents are being reminded to lock their vehicles, homes and garages in the wake of a rash of burglaries and thefts from vehicles in the York metro area, according to York County District Attorney Tom Kearney.

A total of 283 vehicle thefts and 13 burglaries with vehicles taken have been reported so far this year, the public service announcement states. Some of the vehicles have been taken while residents are home or sleeping.

At least seven guns have been taken from stolen vehicles, too.

Residents should not leave keys in their vehicles while they are unattended, the news release states. The office reports that 121 vehicle thefts have occurred in which keys were left inside. Residents also should remove anything of value.

"We are asking the public for their assistance in reporting any suspicious activity to your local police departments," it states.
