D3 doubles tourney: Delone falls in 3rd-place game

Lancaster Catholic's doubles team eliminated Delone Catholic's Alyssa and Ellie Neudecker in the third-place game of the District 3 Class 2A tournament. Lancaster Catholic's Elizabeth Baker and Meredith DeBord secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the Hershey Racquet Club Saturday.

The victory allowed Lancaster Catholic to earn the final berth in the state doubles tournament allotted to District 3.

In an odd twist, Lancaster Catholic and Delone Catholic entered the tournament as the No. 1- and No. 2-seeded teams in the district, but both teams suffered losses in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Berks Catholic upended the top-seeded Crusaders, 7-5, 6-3, on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, eventual champion Wyomissing defeated Delone Catholic 6-2, 6-0. The unexpected losses placed the top ranked teams in the third-place match with only one remaining spot available in the PIAA doubles tournament.

Wyomissing defeated Berks Catholic, 6-2, 6-4, to win the Class 2A title.

In the District 3 Class 3A doubles tournament, Manheim Township defeated Exeter, 6-2, 7-5, to win the crown. The team of Kate Moore and Julia Darkey dropped a combined two games through the first three matches of the tournament before finally landing in a more competitive match in the final. Exeter's Alexis Cramer and Corine Grohoski had also had a dominating start to the tournament, dropping just one game during their first two matches of the tourney.

Hempfield's Katie Donell and Emily Staman defeated Hershey's Megan Lewis and Chandi Desai, 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the third-place match to earn a berth in the Class 3A state tournament.
